What is Yoga?
The word Yoga is derived from the word “yuj” which is a Sanskrit word. Yuj means to integrate or unite. Yoga is an Indian body of knowledge which is 5000 years old. It is about balancing the body with the mind breathe through yoga meditation and yoga postures.
Yoga is not just stretching, but it is more about creating a balance in your body via developing flexibility and strength. This is done through performance of postures and poses which have particular physical benefits. The poses can be done quickly in series, or slowly to increase stamina and perfect the alignment of the pose.
There are different paths of yoga and each one is a specialized branch of a single comprehensive system.
Bikram Yoga: this institute has got this name after the death of its creator famous as Bikram Choudhury. This yoga center is basically a sequence of 26 poses executed in a chamber which has a temperature of 105 degree Fahrenheit. Each pose is done twice and hold for a specific period of time. It starts from standing postures, Back bends, forward bends and lastly twists. These poses are accompanied by “blowing in firm” or kapalabhati breath.
Hatha Yoga: is basically a system of physical postures whose purpose is to purify the body giving the person control and awareness over its internal states and rendering it fit for meditation.
Yin Yoga: is a very slow paced style of yoga in which the postures are held for longer periods of time, 5 minutes or longer per pose is normal. Yin Yoga poses apply a moderate amount of stress to the connective tissues – the ligaments, tendons and fascia and their aim is to increase circulation in the joints and improving flexibility.
Jivamukti Yoga: is a proprietary style of yoga which was created by Sharon Gannon and David Life in 1984. JIvamukti is a spiritual, ethical and physical practice combining dynamic hatha yoga, vinyasa-based physical style with obedience to five central tenets: bhakti (devotion), nāda (music), shastra (scripture), dhyana (meditation) and ahimsa (nonviolence, non-harming). Jivamukti Yoga is the chosen yoga style of many celebrities
Power Yoga: is a general term used in the west to describe the fitness based approach vinyasa style yoga. It emphasizes on flexibility and strength which is why it became famous in the gyms of America.
Yoga classes are normally held at a gym where the physical benefits of pure yoga are the major focus. The classes that are held at a yoga center will be focused more towards the spiritual side. Online yoga classes are also being given now for people who prefer to do yoga at home. There are different postures for yoga for beginners and advanced level yoga.
Yoga is generally known as a stress buster but it is also very good for losing stubborn fat on your body especially for people above the age of 40. Yoga for weight loss has special poses which one must learn so they can lose weight.
Research shows that yoga is an effective treatment for back pain. Poses that emphasize on stretching, flexibility and strength are good for back pain relief. Yoga for back pain relief is a good option for people who have constant back problems.
Yoga for pregnant women: is also very common since it has many benefits. It improves balance and circulation, tones muscles, helps you learn to breath and relax which actually comes very handy during motherhood, birth and labor.
